Brian Sherk
Brian, a Valleyview native, spent his childhood immersed in sports and outdoor pursuits. He graduated from Hillside High School in 2005. During his high school years, Brian excelled in various sports, including cross-country running, volleyball, badminton, track and field, and the business club. His most notable accomplishments in sport include six zone silver medals, two zone gold medals, and a provincial gold medal. Additionally, he received multiple athlete of the year awards and academic honours.
After graduating, Brian enrolled in the two-year transfer program at the Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC), now Northwestern Polytechnic Institute, to the University of Alberta. During his time at GPRC, he was on the badminton and cross-country running teams. Brian continued to excel in his pursuits at the collegiate level, including the following accomplishments: two team provincial silver medals in cross-country running, a spot on the Grande Prix team in cross-country running during the 2006 season, and recognition as the ACAC athlete of the month in badminton during the 2006/2007 season.
Brian transferred to the University of Alberta in the fall of 2007. Choosing to focus on his academic pursuits, Brian successfully gained admission to the physiotherapy program. Brian continued his studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2009 and a Master of Science in Physiotherapy in 2011.
Since completing his formal education he moved with his wife to Grande Prairie to start their family and pursue his professional goals. Brian has continued to increase his knowledge by participating in weekend courses, online education, workshops, conferences, and continuous reading of textbooks and journal articles. Additionally his active role with the NWP partnership has allowed him to give back to the community that helped develop him. Allowing him to mentor student athletes while assisting with their recovery from injuries.
Brian maintains an active lifestyle by engaging in various sports such as badminton, cross-country running, road cycling, outdoor activities, and the challenges of keeping up with his kids. In 2015, he achieved a remarkable athletic feat by completing the Canadian Death Race as a soloist and will be attempting to repeat the accomplishment in 2026. Brian holds a deep appreciation for the body’s incredible capabilities and believes in constantly challenging it. He continues to push his physical limits through diverse activities and inspires others to do the same.
Brian is most proud of his family. He has been married for 17 years and has four children, ranging in age from 12 to 7. If Brian appears exhausted, he is, and he sincerely apologizes for it.
